The Executive Board of Directors consists of 7 members: three officers and four general directors. Executive Board Directors are elected by the general membership in way of written ballot. Director terms are two years in length with the president elect serving one year with a one year term as President following. Regular elections are held in May.
President: Dr. Julie Kittams, Vagabond Veterinary Services Dr. Julie Kittams was raised in Alaska and graduated from Oregon State University in 1997 and has worked in emergency, shelter and general small animal practice. She is a relief veterinarian, most notably in the Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Tualatin, Town & Country Animal Hospital, Peninsula Dog & Cat Clinic and North Portland Animal Hospital. She has volunteered in Thailand, Outback Australia, Dominican Republic, American Indian reservations and traveled to over 20 countries. Moving to Portland in 2006, she came home to her family who own a Christmas tree farm in Molalla. She loves the role she plays in helping veterinarians enjoy life by taking time away from their practice. Her own life is blessed with being a Trail Veterinarian on the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, sea kayaking and home remodeling. She believes professional support is imperative in our environment of high stress, public interactions and small business ownership. She is a strong advocate for the teamwork essential to the day-to-day workings of a hospital and brings her background as a technician to the PVMA. It is an honor to serve colleagues in another capacity at this time in her career. President-Elect and Public Health and Wildlife Agencies Liaison: Dr. Deb Sheaffer, Audubon Society and Cornell Center Animal Hospital Dr. Sheaffer has been practicing small animal practice in the Portland area for over 20 years since graduating from Iowa State University in 1990. Seven years ago she took on the position as Staff Veterinarian for the Audubon Society of Portland Wildlife Care Center and now splits her time between wildlife medicine at Audubon and small animal practice at Cornell Center Animal Hospital. She finds the variety and unpredictability of wildlife medicine exciting, but also enjoys the challenges of general practice. Treasurer: Dr. Don McCoy, North Portland Veterinary Hospital Dr. McCoy graduated from Purdue University in 1970. He purchased the Clinic on Killingsworth in 1972 and moved North Portland Veterinary Hospital into the new building ten years ago. He and his wife have been married for 43 years and have two children. Pam is a Veterinary Technician. Jason is a Biomedical Statistician. They have four grandchildren. While his first passion is Veterinary Medicine, he also enjoys Scuba Diving. He has served on the Board of the Oregon Humane Society and Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital. He joined the PVMA Board to help give some historical perspective to the organization. He also believes strongly that you give back to organizations that help further our professional goals. Public Relations Chair: Dr. Lisa Williams, Pearl Animal Hospital and Mt Tabor Veterinary Care Dr. Lisa Williams is a Portland native and received her veterinary degree from Oregon State University in 2007. Prior to that she was a certified public accountant. She loves animals, and has a special fondness for geriatric dogs and cats and overseas not-for-profit work, but hopes to bring that work more local in the coming years. Continuing Education Chair: Dr. Kim Freeman, Veterinary Cancer Referral Center Dr. Kim Freemanis a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. She is an ACVIM board certified oncologist and has been practicing oncology in the Portland area for 8 years. She opened her own practice, the Veterinary Cancer Referral Center, 2 years ago. Her primary focus is on quality of life care. She takes great pride in educating her staff to provide excellent care to their patients. Dr. Freeman has a great deal of interest in the grief process and compassion fatigue, which can affect pet owners and health care providers, alike. She is currently the CE chair for the PVMA board and enjoys being able to contribute and give back to the veterinary community in this way. DoveLewis Liaison: Dr. Jon Plant, SkinVet Clinic Dr. Jon Plant is a native Oregonian, having graduated from Reed College and Oregon State University (1988). After spending 17 years in southern California, he moved back to Oregon, initially as a faculty member at OSU, then as an industry consultant, and now back in dermatology referral practice. While in SoCal, he served on the executive board of a chapter of the Southern California VMA and was more recently the chairman of the ACVD Certification Exam Committee. Dr. Plant finds that being actively involved in veterinary organizations is very rewarding. Please feel free to contact him if you would like him to bring something to the attention of the Executive Board, especially regarding Dove Lewis matters, for which he serve as the PVMA liaison. Being in a referral practice setting gives him the opportunity to hear from many of you regularly. It is great to see so many practices in our area providing a high level of care to their patients. He especially enjoys hearing from former students. Membership and Publications Chair: Dr. Lori Gibson, Compassionate Care Home Euthanasia Dr. Lori Gibson is a 1999 graduate of Oregon State University (and Washington State University). She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Portland, and is a lifelong resident of the Portland area. Dr. Gibson owns and practices at Compassionate Care Home Pet Euthanasia Service, and she is devoted to providing this service 24/7 to pets and people in the Portland/Vancouver areas. In addition to her experience in small animal clinical practice, Dr. Gibson also worked in the medical device industry managing projects involving drug-eluting intracoronary stents, pacemakers and defibrillators for use in human medicine. Dr. Gibson joined the PVMA Executive Board in August 2010 to further serve the PVMA mission, its members and the public; and to be more involved with our exceptional veterinary community. She currently is the Membership and Publications Chair, and hopes in her tenure to be a part of growing this invaluable association. Dr. Todd McNabb, owner of East Hills Animal Hospital, also regularly attends PVMA Executive Board Meetings as a representative of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association.
