Compassion fatigue has become a big topic of concern in veterinary medicine.  As veterinarians, we constantly face the stresses of patient care, client care, staff care, and self care.  All of these issues can take a toll on our sense of self and well being.  However, there are ways to balance these stressors in our lives.  One way is to find support within our own medical community.  I believe that we can help each other by sharing our stories.  There is a model called “Finding Meaning in Medicine,” founded by Dr. Rachel Remen through the Institute for the Study of Health & Illness that has demonstrated the benefits of story telling and discussion groups that enables participants to become resources for one another.  This type of group can enable participants to develop a personal sense of service; support and validate that what we do is meaningful, which can strengthen our commitment to our work; validate that what we do has value to our clients and patients; strengthen our sense of calling and community within medicine; and find greater meaning through the stories of our clients and patients through the human animal bond.

We will discuss the topic of "Awe in Medicine". There will be veterinarians, primary care physicians and mental health counselors invited. We would like everyone to bring a story or exercise related to the topic as it has resonated with you personally. It can be drawn from many things. Whether it be from your personal or professional life, the world of literature, poetry, or simply an exercise to be shared with the group in order to explore the topic in greater depth.

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
