Animals and the Law

In this talk, we'll learn about Oregon's animal cruelty laws, what to do about potentially harmful social media, and how the legal status of animals affects contracts and criminal proceedings.

Speakers:

Nicole Jergovic, JD, Deputy District Attorney, Multnomah County, will present about Oregon animal cruelty laws, how they might apply in different situations and provide information about how to report suspected animal cruelty along with tips about what you can do if you see something on social media that you are concerned about.

&

David Rosengard, J.D. LL.M., Staff Attorney, Animal Legal Defense Fund, will then explore how animals are positioned within the law, what creatures legally count as animals, and the impact of different animal classifications. Along the way, he will touch on how the legal status of animals implicates their relationship with various practice areas, including contracts and torts, concluding with an exploration of how three significant recent Oregon animal crime cases (State v. Nix; State v. Fessenden; State v. Newcomb) illustrate the changing legal position of animals.

Free event for volunteers and professionals in the animal field.  Suggested $5 donation.
