The format of this year’s symposium will be workshop-style, with a half day focus on

veterinary-animal behavior and a half day-focus on human behavior!

More Than Good Recommendations: Strategies for Achieving Successful Treatment Outcomes

 

Every patient that you see comes with at least one family member who will be responsible for implementing your recommendations.  For better or for worse, achieving a successful outcome is about so much more than just the recommendation that you give!  The “human element” side of veterinary medicine requires you to recognize, navigate, and accommodate the patterns that affect the client’s ability to implement the plan that you give. 

 

This workshop will explore many of those barriers to success using a case-based format (examples will be behavior specific but the principles generalize much more broadly) that will challenge you to think about problems in new ways.  Specific topics will include navigating issues of anthropomorphism and anthropocentrism, identifying client strengths rather than faults, evaluating the physical environment for obstacles to success, and responding appropriately to sensitive information that is shared by clients. 

 

Through small and large group discussion, you will learn to recognize communication patterns, partner more effectively with your clients, develop dialogues for navigating common situations, empower your clients to implement your recommendations, and ultimately be more successful in your practice.

 

 

About Dr. Pachel:

 

Dr. Pachel received his veterinary degree from the University of MN in 2002 and worked as a general practitioner for two years in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area prior to the start of his behavior residency program. He operated a house-call behavior practice in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area until 2010 and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in 2010. He spent 3.5 years of his residency period under the mentorship of Jacqui Neilson, DVM, DACVB at the Animal Behavior Clinic in Portland, OR before purchasing the practice from her in 2011.

As the owner and primary clinician for the Animal Behavior Clinic, he brings an approach to behavioral therapy which combines learning theory, medical training, and experience along with compassion and effective communication to create a balanced treatment plan that is tailored to the individual patient’s needs. Dr. Pachel’s methodology emphasizes the importance of the human animal bond and the role that companion animals play in the lives of their families.

Outside of direct patient care, Dr. Pachel lectures regularly throughout the US and Canada, and has taught undergraduate and professional courses in veterinary behavior at the University of MN and at the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He has published research on feline water consumption preferences, wrote a book chapter on Intercat Aggression for the May 2014 issue of Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, and is co-author of a book chapter on Pet Selection for Animal Assisted Therapy.

Communication Tips to Create a Happy and Harmonious Veterinary Team

About Karlene: 

 

Karlene’s passion is speaking to groups about how to improve communications and happiness in the workplace.

 

She is a certified Everything DiSC® Trainer and presents sessions on behavioral styles, generational differences, working with millennials, body language, leadership and influence, happiness in the workplace and work/life balance. Karlene focuses on how to work together more effectively through understanding and appreciating the differences in people, while working to improve communications, team building, customer service and conflict resolution.

Karlene has been the CEO of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) since 2003 and has more than 28 years of experience in association management and working with groups. She also serves as Executive Director of the Michigan Animal Health Foundation. Prior to joining the MVMA, she was Chief Operating Officer of the Michigan Nurses Association, served as Executive Director of the Michigan Nurses Foundation and operated the Michigan Dental Hygienists Association. She holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications from Michigan State University.

 

Proceedings, 7 CE credits, meals (light breakfast, full lunch & afternoon snack), and beverages throughout the day, will be included!
