WAKE UP, VET MED. Diversity is one of the most critical challenges facing veterinary medicine today. Beyond the indisputable fact that our profession is one of the least racially and ethnically diverse in the nation, it can no longer be ignored that the future relevance of our field hinges upon the growth and development of a workforce that more closely resembles the American population at large. The veterinary community has discussed and explored the issue of diversity, equity, and inclusion enough. The time for talk is over. The time for decisive, committed...

While many things have changed in 2020, we are committed to maintaining support of two organization that rely heavily on donated supplies and funds to do the important work they do. For PAW Team especially, the need for their services will only continue to increase as people in our community are impacted by loss of work, income, and shelter more then ever. We are so grateful to this organization (and all our community members who volunteer with them) for helping those in need, care for their beloved pets. To encourage safety and...

In response to the continued increase of COVID-19 cases and the ongoing efforts to navigate the pandemic, Oregon Occupational Safety And Health Authority (OSHA) has adopted a temporary enforceable workplace rule. The new rule is similar in many parts to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) guidance that has been shared out over the past 7 months, including physical distancing and face coverings. Additional layers are now included relating to infection control, notice to employees, requirements to assess COVID-19 exposure risk, and workplace monitoring that are new to Oregon employers, including those in veterinary...

Well, September was just terrible (we can all list off many reasons, so I won’t start). I thought things had surely hit a low point….and then I heard the news of the death of Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The loss of RBG, of such a warrior for women’s rights, was certainly disheartening and felt like another blow when we were already down. But it made many of us more closely review and remember her career and accomplishments, and that is helping to transform the loss into gratitude and inspiration. Without women...

With the arrival of fall comes what has traditionally been considered flu (and cold) season. While it is difficult to predict what things will look like this year, there are some considerations that can be made given the addition of COVID-19. Although wearing face coverings for COVID-19 prevention may result in decreased flu infection and cases this season, the first cases of Influenza in Oregon have already been documented. Now more than ever, it is important for anyone with symptoms of viral illnesses to stay home from work and keep a...

The PVMA Board of Directors is introducing a new mentorship program to support OSU Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine students during their 3rd and 4th years. Intention The goal of this program is to provide an opportunity for veterinary students to connect with veterinarians in the Portland metro area to gain insight and knowledge into the practice of veterinary medicine that is beyond the academic setting. This mentor relationship may also provide networking and added support for the student as they graduate and navigate the first years as a veterinarian. In turn, this is...

Regional Fire Response Update: The PVMA is on daily calls with MAC-G (Regional Disaster Preparedness Organization Animal Multi-Agency Coordination Group) and the group is working very well together to ensure Clackamas County Dog Services especially, has the support and resources needs to care for evacuated animals. We are grateful to those who have opted to be available if volunteer vets are needed. At this time, large animal/equine vets are in highest demand but have been organized and many large animals are starting to be moved back home or to long-term temp...
